Hi Meg, sometimes is does work out with two male hamsters together but not always. If you already have them together, I would have a second cage handy in case they start fighting.
Hi I was just wondering if hamsters are a good first pet? I have a 3 yr old daughter whose been beggin for a REAL puppy but we aren’t ready for that so was thinking something smaller! Do hamsters bite a lot? Do they like to be pet/held?
Hi Mandy, hamsters can make great pets for kids. They are very social little animals who do very well with kids if they are handled properly. They can bite if they get squished to hard or if little fingers are very salty (they think its food). For smaller kids (typically 5 and under) I usually recommend guinea pigs. They are bigger animals for the smaller hands to hang onto and less likely to bite. I would recommend that you come in with your daughter and handle a few of the guinea pigs and hamsters and see how she does.
